Breast Augmentation Before & After

This patient in her early 30s chose teardrop (anatomically shaped) silicone gel implants to get the natural-looking results she wanted. Dr. Tantillo made incisions at the inframammary folds (the base of the breasts) and placed the implants above the muscle (subglandular placement). What Is Breast Augmentation?

Dr. Tantillo performs breast augmentation, also called breast enlargement, in his Boston area practice to enhance a woman's bust size. Using breast implants or excess body fat, Dr. Tantillo is able to create a more attractive breast shape and size so that his patients can feel more confident about their looks, both in and out of clothing.

In addition to type and size of breast implant, women have many other breast augmentation options. Dr. Tantillo is able to place incisions either under the breast, around the nipple, or in the armpit depending on your anatomy and the type of breast implant chosen. Breast implants are most commonly placed underneath the chest wall muscle, although some women choose to have the implants placed above the muscle.

For some women whose breasts are beginning to droop, breast augmentation also can improve the shape of the breasts to create a more youthful appearance. Dr. Tantillo offers a variety of other breast enhancement procedures that he can customize to give you the look you desire.

Who Is a Candidate for Breast Enlargement?

At his Boston practice, Dr. Tantillo sees a range of patients from age 18 to 60 whose goals for getting breast implants vary as much as the patients themselves. Some are in their early 20s and have thought about getting breast augmentation for years, while others are moms who want to restore volume lost after having children. Patients may have a narrow body frame or wider shoulders. Dr. Tantillo takes all of this into consideration when discussing each woman's options.

While the specific reasons are unique, the general breast augmentation goals of most of our patients are to:

  • Increase the size and fullness of their breasts
  • Make their breasts more proportional to the rest of their bodies
  • Restore volume lost after pregnancy, nursing, or significant weight loss
  • Create symmetry when one breast is larger than the other

It's important that patients are aware of the risks and responsibilities associated with getting breast implants. Dr. Tantillo carefully reviews these risks with you at the consultation. Additionally, he performs a comprehensive health examination for all breast enhancement patients.

Procedure Details

Once you make the exciting decision to get breast implants, you need to make several more choices so Dr. Tantillo can help you get the results you desire. These options include the:

  • Size of your implants
  • Shape of your implants
  • Implant filler
  • Implant shell texture
  • Incision locations
  • Implant placement

Dr. Tantillo helps you understand your options and how your overall cosmetic goals influence the decisions you make. For example, if you want results that look very natural, you may opt for anatomically shaped silicone gel implants, rather than round implants that offer a more dramatic transformation.

Dr. Tantillo performs breast augmentation using general anesthesia because it relaxes the muscles, which decreases bleeding and the risk of capsular contracture. Breast pocket symmetry is also better when the muscles are relaxed. The recovery after general anesthesia is no longer than with sedation anesthesia; patients typically go home an hour after the procedure ends.

Depending on the size and type of implants you want, you have a choice of 3 incision locations: periareolar, inframammary, and transaxillary incisions. Each of these has its advantages. Regardless of which you choose, Dr. Tantillo uses advanced suturing techniques to ensure your scars are as fine and discreet as possible.

After making the incisions, Dr. Tantillo inserts the implants and places them in 1 of 2 locations: a subfascial placement behind the breast tissue and above the pectoral muscle, or a dual plane placement under the pectoral muscle.

After placing the implants, Dr. Tantillo closes the incisions, and the medical staff monitors you in a recovery room to ensure you are ready to return home. Patients typically need only MOTRIN® for pain control. Patients typically return to normal activities the evening of surgery or day after surgery.

Breast Augmentation Using Fat Transfer

Over the years, many of Dr. Tantillo's patients have asked, "Can't you just take some of the fat from down here and put it up there?" Well, now the answer is, "Yes!" Dr. Tantillo offers his patients breast augmentation using the micro fat grafting technique. He can remove unwanted fat from areas such as the abdomen, love handles, or thighs using liposuction. The fat is then prepared and transferred to the breasts through micro grafting.

Patients interested in liposuction and a modest breast augmentation or improvement of breast shape may by good candidates for fat transfer. Patients must wear a suction cup bra before and after the surgery in order to prepare the breast tissue to accept the fat graft. The recovery from the surgery is similar to the recovery from liposuction.

Recovery & Results

Breast enlargement is performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning that you will be able to go home the day of surgery. Within the first week following breast augmentation you should be able to return to most of your normal activities, adding in exercise and other strenuous activities about 2 to 3 weeks after surgery.

Most women are very happy with the results of their breast enlargement and find their new figure invigorating. Imagine enjoying a newfound self-confidence in a variety of outfits including business attire, formal wear, casual clothing, as well as swimwear and even lingerie. A new look and outlook are possible with breast augmentation.
