He understands that no amount of crunches or dieting will restore your abdominal skin and muscles to their original shape, and belly fat is some of the toughest to get rid of.

What is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure for women and men who remain unsatisfied with their abdominal area in spite of diet and exercise. People visit Dr. Tantillo near Boston for tummy tuck surgery to enhance the look of their abdominal area by:

  • Removing excess skin and fatty tissue from the lower part of the abdomen
  • Tightening weakened or separated abdominal wall muscles
  • Sculpting the waistline
  • Flattening out the tummy
  • Reshaping the belly button

Who is a Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

Ideal candidates for this procedure are women and men who are:

  • At a stable weight
  • Physically healthy, non-smokers
  • Dissatisfied with the look of their abdomen
  • Not considering future pregnancies

Abdominoplasty is not a weight loss method, nor is it a substitute for regular exercise. It is an effective, long-lasting way to enhance your abdominal contour. The procedure can be very effective in treating fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise. The best way to determine if tummy tuck surgery is right for you is to talk with Dr. Tantillo one-on-one in your personal consultation.

Types of Tummy Tucks

Dr. Tantillo personalizes each tummy tuck procedure to the unique needs of the patient, but overall, the procedure falls under 1 of 2 categories:

  • Full tummy tuck: Most patients require a full tummy tuck for comprehensive abdominal rejuvenation. This technique removes loose skin and excess fat above and below the belly button. It also gives Dr. Tantillo the opportunity to repair any bulging abdominal muscles that were stretched and separated during pregnancy. The belly button is usually reshaped as well.
  • Mini tummy tuck: Patients with only minimal sagging below the belly button and fairly tight abdominal muscles may benefit from the less-invasive mini tummy tuck. This technique involves a shorter incision than the full tummy tuck and leaves the belly button intact. Recovery is usually quicker, as well.

Dr. Tantillo usually performs tummy tuck procedures in his onsite, fully accredited surgery center as an outpatient procedure. A general anesthetic is administered by a board-certified M.D. anesthesiologist.

For a full tummy tuck, Dr. Tantillo makes an incision that spans the hip bones, crossing above the pubic bone. In most cases, he makes a second incision just inside the belly button to release it from the abdominal skin.

Next, Dr. Tantillo lifts the skin to expose and repair the separated abdominal muscles. He then pulls the skin down over the reshaped abdomen, removes excess skin and fat, and repositions and reshapes the belly button. Dr. Tantillo often uses liposuction in tandem with the tummy tuck procedure to sculpt the waist and hips.

Complete Your Transformation

Dr. Tantillo can often safely combine breast and body contouring procedures in a single surgery to provide a more complete transformation and reduce overall recovery time. Combining procedures in this way is often called a mommy makeover.

Many women choose one or more of the following procedures to be combined with their tummy tucks:

Dr. Tantillo performs these personalized combination procedures in his onsite surgical suite or in a hospital setting, as appropriate for the situation. Patients often spend a night in the hospital after surgery, although sometimes they decide that they are ready to go home the day of surgery. During your consultation, Dr. Tantillo will help you think through the details of your recovery.

Recovery & Results

After your procedure, your abdomen will look flatter and leaner. However, your treated areas will be swollen, and you'll need to wear a compression garment for a week or two. Dr. Tantillo will recommend that you gradually resume light activity to encourage healing. He allows most of his patients to return to work and non-strenuous activity within 2 to 3 weeks following surgery.

Once recovery is complete, Dr. Tantillo's tummy tuck patients feel attractive and more confident both in and out of their clothing. Imagine no more extra skin spilling over your waistband and no more tummy bulge in flowing dresses and skirts. A slim, trim abdominal profile is possible with a tummy tuck.
