Anna's Tummy Tuck

Following the birth of her second child, Anna noticed that her stomach was left with extra hanging skin, which she described as looking like "an empty bag." As she got older and gained some weight, her belly became rounder and more extended. Anna was living in South America at the time, where plastic surgery wasn't discussed much. She recalls, "Nobody considered plastic surgery. Plastic surgery was for movie stars." She focused on being a good mom and wife and didn't concern herself much with her belly, but it continued to bother her.

Seeking Help

In 2001, Anna visited 2 plastic surgeons to discuss the appearance of her stomach. The first tried to convince Anna that she needed multiple other procedures, like a breast lift, lip augmentation and eyelid surgery. Anna had one word for him - "goodbye." The second surgeon provided a much better consultation experience, but when Anna told him that she was planning to move to the United States in 6 months, he recommended she wait to have surgery until she was settled. She took his advice and put her plans on hold until her relocation was completed.

After moving to Massachusetts in 2002, plastic surgery was immediately on Anna's mind. She did extensive research online, reading patient testimonials and educating herself on procedures. Then she began calling practices, using a list of 50 doctors that she received from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Dr. Tantillo's office responded first, the same day she called, and she chose to visit with him because of his office's prompt communication and kind manner. When she contacted his office a second time, she spoke with Pam, Dr. Tantillo's surgical office manager, whose genuine, friendly, and professional demeanor made quite an impression on Anna. Anna says, "She gave me the whole picture. She made it happen."

Finding a Boston Plastic Surgeon She Could Trust

Anna met Dr. Tantillo at her consultation appointment and was immediately charmed. She says, "Besides being a great doctor, he's charismatic - his personality is so bright." Anna discussed tummy tuck options with Dr. Tantillo. She was interested in a mini tummy tuck, but Dr. Tantillo explained to her that she would benefit most from a full tummy tuck in Boston and wouldn't be happy with her results otherwise. Anna took his recommendation and scheduled her surgery for January 2008.

On the day of surgery, Anna was nervous. This was going to be her first surgery ever and she was mainly scared of being put under general anesthesia. The anesthesiologist helped ease her mind when he looked her in the eyes and assured, "I will take very good care of you." She recalls that Dr. Tantillo was especially kind, explaining everything about the procedure again and then marking her abdomen. All she remembers next is waking up. It took her 4 hours to wake up, longer than normal, and her family insisted on visiting her in the recovery room to make sure she was OK. Anna laughs, "I think I was just very tired from Christmas and shopping. I was fine." The entire surgery went as planned with no complications.

An Easy Recovery - And a Tiny Scar

Anna requested a pain pump during recovery and says, "It was the most wonderful thing." She liked how the pump provided anesthesia directly to her incision area so that she didn't have to experience the side effect of other pain killers - nausea, dizziness, sweating and weakness. Anna recalls, "My head was clear, my mood was good, and there was no withdrawal."

My husband thinks I look gorgeousShe says that the worst part of recovery following her Boston tummy tuck was when she first saw her scar. Initially she didn't want to look at it at all, but one day she found herself alone and opened her girdle to take a peek. She says she almost fainted. After that, Anna says, "I decided to take care of my scar. I started to massage the scar and talk to it." She imagined the scar healing as she rubbed Vaseline on it 3 times a day. Now, 4 months later, her scar is still red but it's tiny. Anna says, "It looks good," and she expects that in a year it will have the same color as the rest of her skin.

Today, Anna is very pleased with the result of her tummy tuck from Boston plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Tantillo. She says, "I am the same size as before, a 6 or 8, but my clothes look so much better on me." Before surgery it was very difficult to find nice clothes - she would spend 3 hours shopping just to find something flattering to wear. Now she can wear fitted clothes instead of "grandma things." She says, "My husband thinks I look gorgeous and I feel very confident. I am very happy with the results."
